The BMW Car Club of the Philippines brought out their meanest rides in this year’s Bimmerfest 2012. Held at the Bonifacio High Street on the 5th of May, we got to see the much loved and pampered beauties. On my way there it actually started to rain, so I wasn’t hoping on getting a lot of photos in, but as soon as I parked, the sun came shining, and a team of dedicated detailers worked their magic across all the cars in the show.

The Manila International Auto Show, or MIAS as most call it, has always been a manufacturer centric show, with the big names always showing up with massive displays and floor space. This year’s MIAS had all that as expected, but also offered a healthy doze of the aftermarket car culture.

This first set of photos covers the manufacturers exhibits in the main hall.

March 17 saw drift cars heading towards Clark International Speedway to compete in this year’s most definitive drift event yet. The Car Porn Racing Team, led by Ian King, started the event with practice laps, and suddenly I was thrown into drift heaven. The all important ingredient to every great drift event, freshly burnt rubber, was more than abundant.

The sound of screeching tires as cars sped sideways was unmistakable. You could see Ian conducting the event throughout the day, with spectators fueled by the action courtesy of the day’s drifters.

When not on the track, the drift cars could be inspected up close, whilst being prepped for their next run.

After a few runs, drivers turn to their cars for a quick inspection, just making sure the wheels were still attached… At least all the ROTAs were

As the drifters were unleashed on the track, you knew they meant business… and what drift track will be complete without a Trueno gracing it’s rubber smeared tarmac.

The yellow Celica of Joma Montañer was my personal favorite (along with the A70).

The marshal may have had a bad burrito earlier that morning, forcing the drivers to manage the event on their own… just kidding. Despite the event essentially being a competition, the atmosphere was friendly, with everyone out there to have fun among friends

On-site body work will always be expected during drift events (or any motorsport event for that matter). It is all part of the fun.

Drifting requires just as much precision and control, and perpetual adjustments to the car’s suspension is a common sight.

The event was blessed with great weather, and everyone enjoyed the increasing competitiveness of the drivers.

“The Mile” is a one-day celebration of speed which was held at Subic Bay International Airport, organized by the TrackHos car club. At the same time, it was also a charitable event, where all proceeds went to the Philippine Red Cross to help the victims of the recent Typhoon Sendong.

Though this was meant to be an event for all types of “fast and high-horsepower cars”, from tuner cars to performance cars to high-end exotics, since the bulk of the Civic/Subaru/Evo crowd was caught up in the Manila Auto Salon, which happened on the same weekend, it was only the high-end cars that were able to make it, plus maybe a handful of heavily-modified Honda Civics.

So it turned out that “The Mile” was so far the most epic gathering of some of the country’s most ultra-high-end exotic cars to date. From Audi R8s to Ford GTs to a plethora of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, Nissan GTRs, and more, you’d start to wonder why the Philippines is called a third-world country!

And what better place to unleash all that pent-up horsepower, than for the club to find the longset, straightest, flattest road around? The answer – a runway. Specifically, Subic Bay International Airport. No wonder even the top motoring shows in the world such as BBC Top Gear use runways for testing the most powerful cars. You can go flat-out and be one with your machine without having to risk public safety! How awesome is that?

How often do you see an E39 BMW M5 rolling the streets here in the Philippines? That’s right, not that often.

How about a widebody E39 BMW M5? Perhaps never.

That makes me proud to present you with Ian King’s widebody E39 BMW M5. A one-of-a-kind monster from the CarPorn stable.

As if the highly tuned 4.9L BMW S62 V8 engine featuring double-VANOS, a screaming 7,000rpm redline, and individual throttle butterflies for each cylinder, combined to make 400 PS on a rear wheel drive platform isn’t enough to make your spine tingle, Ian has further modified this with aftermarket goodies such as an air filter, headers, exhaust, ECU, etc. along with suspension and brake modifications to put the the “U” in the Ultimate Driving Experience.

But what they’re really proud of is that they have custom-built the body kit (which is still a work in progress), and the car was widened to fit a staggering set of 18×12 Rota P45 Wheels on all four corners!

This is Ian King. And with him is his amazing creation – a beast of a machine in the form of an extremely modified E46 BMW 3-series, oozing with 6.2 Liters of absolute madness. Yes, under the hood sits a modern Corvette V8 engine.

Imagine such a small and nimble ride that once lived the life of a family sedan, now possessed by over 430 malevolent stallions lurking underneath that carbon fiber skin, all waiting to be unleashed by his command, coerced by his right foot.

Seeing them being set free is a breathtaking experience. Because with him at the helm, this car takes on a rather unusual behavior. Instead of simply lurching forward, eating up asphalt faster than your angel can fly, this car prefers to perform graceful yet aggressive sideways dance moves, all while leaving burnt rubber in its wake, and leaving a cloud of tire smoke in your face.

Yes, it’s a full-on drift car. And if you haven’t seen what’s in store underneath all that carbon fiber and sheet metal, then you haven’t been following Custom Pinoy Rides enough. And then we enter Intex Osaka. On the main hall was a whole-day concert on stage with different shows. It was surprising to see how crowded the venue was, considering its huge proportions.

Entering Hall 2 (Hall 1 was the foodcourt), we were greeted by an Alpina B3 GT3 right at the entrance.

3-liter straight six, twin turbo, 408hp. The monster 6-pot calipers hide behind the familiar set of Alpina Classic forged alloy wheels.

The thing gives Porsches a run for their money.

Akrapovic, of motorcycle exhaust fame, made the titanium exhaust system for the Alpina B3 GT3.

Alpina is making only 99 of these 3-series-on-crack, and I’m pretty sure that they’ll all be sold out in a jiffy.

Afterwards, we moved to the Subaru exhibit right across from the BMW section. Moving through the hordes of auto-otaku, we saw a Subaru concept car, the Advanced Tourer concept, which appears to be the next Legacy.

I doubt that the semi-gullwing doors will make it into production.

The Subaru section also featured the GT300 Legacy, which won 2 class wins in the Super GT series.

Sure, there was a Super GT race car on display. But the most crowded Subaru display was this:

The highly anticipated offspring from Toyota and Subaru: The BRZ. Nearly identical to its Toyota 86 twin, it grabs just as much attention.

The BRZ and 86 are about to revive the low-cost, high-performance auto segment; which saw a long drought of cheaper performance cars with the death of names like the Nissan Silvia, Honda S2000, Toyota MR-S, and so on.

The moment we stepped off the tram, we knew we were going some place epic. It was practically a car show along the road. It felt like every car nut in Osaka was going to the Motor Show.

A bone-stock NSX was in line for the parking area of Intex Osaka.

An S2000 was also in line. All-stock performance cars like these are becoming a rarity even here in Japan.

Here’s something we don’t see everyday: a pristine Alfa Romeo Giulia.

American cars are a bit of a novelty for the Japanese.

Just two cool cars moving along.

We also saw this cool Type-R themed Odyssey. It’s got the stance, the looks, and seats seven.

And here’s the venue: a behemoth of a structure, with five halls each the size of an aircraft hangar.

You can see how the Japanese take their cars seriously. This is the queue to the ticket booth.
