2010 Lateral Drift Pro-Am Championship Round 6

All eyes were on the finale of this year’s Lateral Drift Pro-Am Championship. The 6th and final round was held last August 28-29 in the parking lots in Eastwood, Quezon City.

After failing to advance in the top 8 in the previous round, Pacho Blanco’s powerful S13 was all-out in this round for the battle for 3rd place in the championship. Unfortunately, he retired in this round after suffering from throttle issues.

His car sits cool after advancing the qualifying round, only to know the following day that he’ll suffer from the throttle problems.

Alex Perez looks on as he is determined to win the Pro-division championship. A win here will give him a very high chance of winning the championship even if Pro-division championship leader Gio Rodriguez will finish runner-up in this round.

Atoy Llave in his awesome Merc 190E showed off well in the qualifying round.

He moves sideways, on his way to advancing to the top 16 for Sunday.

The qualifying round had a delay of almost one and a half hour, and everyone was waiting as the round was hot and dry.

Luckily, there were promo girls in the pit area to entertain the crowd’s eyes.

After the event was now underway, everyone was watching the Happy-New-Year Cefiro of Cocoy Dy in the Amateur division. The car gives off frequent popping sounds similar to the fireworks, hence the monicker.

One of the most unforgettable moments this year was Kar Montaner’s win in the Amateur division in the 4th round.

Although the Montaner’s were out of the championship contention, the son showed a lot of promise and finished the round with a bang.

As the event went to the night, Jason Choachuy was steady, as he battles for the 3rd spot in the championship.

Mike Tuason raises his hand, as he is the winner of the Amateur division in Round 6! He wins the championship for the Amateur division for 2010! Bjorn Ongtiabok, who drives the same BT50 as Tuason’s, finishes in the podium in 3rd, and finishes runner-up in the Amateur championship for 2010.

The star of Lady Dada, Ryan Agoncillo, finishes the championship with a bang in 2nd place for the Amateur division.

For the Pro-division, it was a hardly fought battle for the championship, as both the championship contenders made it to the top 4. For the youngster though, he loses out. Gio Rodriguez finishes off in 3rd place, on his way to runner up for the Pro-division this year.

By winning the last round, it proved to be very crucial, as Alex Perez wins in the last round of the Pro-division Championship, on his way to become this year’s Lateral Drift Pro Division champion!

Dressed to represent alright! This Subaru Impreza may look as if it were straight off a foreign rally team’s garage. But wait, if you look closer, apart from the number of aftermarket manufacturer logos fit for a parts mogul, some of the logos are actually from local businesses, mostly based in Antipolo city!

I don’t know about you, but this is a Toyota Starlet that I would definitely want to have. The only exception would be a Toyota Starlet with a 4A-GZE plus an additional Turbocharger to make 250+ hp. LOL!

Engine Tech: Ventilate your Block for More Power!

Serious engine builders have for many years used every aspect of engine dynamics to harness more power. As we talked about oiling modifications to the block to free-up more HP and when combined with Synthetic oils even more can be realized.

Now we will look at block pressure build-up from the resultant blow by of spent gases that by-passed the rings. This block pressure will sometimes exceed atmospheric pressure and you have pressure build-up on the wrong end of the engine. This also has a negative effect on the engines performance.

If uncontrolled, this block pressure will back track to the ring pack during the intake event. When Vacuum is present in the chamber and you have high pressure below it at the rings, This will contaminate the fresh incoming mixture and a loss of power will result. Also all this gases will contaminate and break down the oils ability to lubricate and protect the engine.

DRAFT TUBE VENTILATION:
Used in the early 50′s automobiles, It is usually located in a low pressure area of the undercarriage. This will create a negtative pressure (suction) effect and pull crankcase pressure out of the block. marginally effective and you need speed for it to function properly.

PCV VALVE AND CLOSED AIR FILTER SYSTEM:
Works good at idle and part throttle cruising mode, inadequate at full speed and usually pulls all this blow-by gases back into the intake manifold ! Works great on stock engines, no business in a race application.

OPEN BREATHERS:
Every High Performance engine has one in the valve cover area.
Works but not effective enough and more like a chimney when there is pressure, it will exit the gases here. Some breathers are installed on the block or sometimes on the highest part of the engine. Best location is in the front of the engine where the high speed of the incoming air hopefully can pull crankcase gases out.

PAN EVACUATION SYSTEM:
The block is sealed in the crankcase and a tube runs from the block/valve covers and is connected to the headers via the collector area. A one way valve is used between this to keep back-fires from going up to the crankcase and creating an explosion from the combustible gases present inside the block, also exhaust pressure back flow can go this opposite way and pressurises the block.
Effective when not used with a muffler, I have seen attempts by Racers to connect a Venturi tube after the collector, or in conjunction with a muffler but this will be only marginally effective.

VACUUM PUMPS:
Now we are getting serious here. An external pump is used or at the beginning we were using SMOG PUMPS that we modified to create vacuum inside the block.
There were power gains as long as we are around 11 inches of vacuum. Any more will dry up the rings and cylinder bores. Lifters will also be affected so be cautious here.

DRY SUMP OILING SYSTEMS:
Usually has several pressure stages to feed pressurized oil to the block, also has 1 stage to evacuate the crankcase oils from the block. This results on a vaccuum being drawn out at the block.

MODIFICATIONS TO THE BLOCK FOR POWER:
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR SECOND RING GAP BE OPENED UP TO FACILITATE THE RAPID EXPULSION OF GASES TRAP BETWEEN THE TOP AND SECOND RINGS….
A LOW TENSION OIL RING AND RING PACKAGE IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT!
THIS WILL CUT DOWN ON THE ROTATIONAL FRICTION PRODUCED BY THE RINGS,HENCE MORE POWER. Be careful when you use “low tension” ring packages when you dont evacuate the block !
Oil consumption may result and smoke can be obvious at the mufflers….

A LOT OF BUILDERS WILL SAY THAT THEY HAVE NOT SEEN A POWER INCREASE WHEN THEY CREATED A VACUUM INSIDE THE BLOCK ! CHECK YOUR RING GAPS AND YOU WILL SEE RESULTS!!!

WHEN THIS IS PROPERLY ENGINEERED THE ENGINE WILL SEE UPWARDS OF 40+ HORSEPOWER ON A V-8 RACING ENGINE.

THIS IS DUE TO THE REDUCTION OF RESIDUAL GASES THAT WAS TRAPPED BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND RINGS THAT WILL BE ” REINTRODUCED” BACK INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS DURING THE INTAKE EVENT.THIS RESIDUAL GASES ARE LEFTOVER BLOWBY GASES UNDER HIGH PRESSURE FROM THE LAST EXHAUST EVENT…

MOTORCYCLE RACERS:
If you have access to an old pipe, drill a small hole into the pipe where the cylinders meet and connect a vacuum gauge, carefull placement of this hole will yield a vacuum reading at full throttle! And this is where you want to connect back to your block. Make sure to use a 1 way smog pump check valve between this two! DO NOT attempt this on a 2 stroke engine….

If you are running with no mufflers this area is most effective at the collector of the headers where you can put a tube that protudes into the middle of the collector, this is the same for the cars….

Lateral Drift Championship Series 2010 – Action Shots and the Final Leg’s Winners

This is the 6th and final leg of the 2010 Lateral Drift Championship Series. The event took place at Eastwood Libis, from the 28th to the 29th of August. And boy was it totally packed with excitement! From the sounds of the roaring engines, to the hiss of the blow-off valves, to the squeal of tires smokin’ like there’s no tomorrow, this event was a natural high for total gearheads.

70kph entry speeds inside the confines of a parking lot is no joke! And to add to the adrenaline, the track went from dry, to wet, to completely drenched, giving the competitors the challenge of a lifetime!

Pictured above is Gio Rodriguez burning rubber while going sideways in the Nissan Skyfiro – A Nissan Cefiro with a Skyline front end and rear tail lights. Below are more action shots of Gio Rodriguez, taking the car through its paces for a 3rd place finish in the Pro Division.

Ric Manalo, the Guam Drift Champ, was all out over the weekend, with superb lines and consistent performance, that is… until one mistake happened… where he lost his drift out of a corner during a battle with Gio Rodriguez.

John Raphel Boban in the DriftMobs 4-door Nissan Skyline. A mistake through a stalled drift while going against Alex N Perez cost him his chances. The stall also resulted in a slight collission between the two. But no heavy damage.

Francisco Blanco probably has the biggest amount of horsepower in the field, churning 575 horses to the rear wheels, almost always producing the most tire smoke. But due to technical difficulties courtesy of a stuck throttle, he was given a DNF.

This man needs no introduction. Atoy Llave of A-Toy Body Kits behind the wheel doing what this Mercedez Benz 190E was tuned to do – go sideways!

RJ Obiedo in the Nissan S15 Silvia. Unfortunately, a spin-out cost him his chances of winning.

Audel Sison is always fun to watch piloting the Fern-C Mercedez, with his no-holds-barred driving style, he’s not afraid to take it as close to the wall and all the clipping points as possible. No carnage for this round though…

Jason “The Destroyer” Choachuy went all out, and gave the judges a hard time to determine the winner between his tandem run with Alex N Perez. But in the end, the round was given to Alex, who also went onwards to win the event.

Battle of the old school cars – teammates Boodie Dabasol in the Lancer and Joma Montaner in the Corona had to go head-to-head. And they actually collided during their first tandem run.

Who said Mitsubishi Lancer L-Types can’t drift? Boodie Dabasol performed flawlessly during the event in this 1976 Lancer. And he went on to take 2nd place, losing to Alex N Perez due to a spin-out in the water-drenched track.

And lastly, action shots of the Champion of the 6th round, Alex N Perez, in the Yellow Cab Nissan Silvia, showing what it takes to be a winner.
