/> When you hear the name “Suzuki Vitara”, you picture a tiny capable little 4×4 that blends well in city traffic and, well, doesn’t really stand out in the foray of CRV’s and RAV4′s that cruise the metro.

But when you hear the name “199 Offroad House”, you instantly get pictures of crazy monster 4×4′s with massive tires that eat boulders for breakfast.

So what if you take a Suzuki Vitara, and bring it to 199 Offroad House? Well, you get this… a Suzuki Vitara… ON STEROIDS!!!

Read on to see more of this awesome machine.

Take one look at this ride and you’ll find it hard to comprehend how this happened. It’s like David met Goliath and instead of battling it out to the death, they decided to be friends and combine forces for the heck of it. And you know what? It’s awesome!

The Punisher on the front bumper. Very fitting, as this vehicle will surely punish any obstacle it faces. And if all else fails, there’s always that winch to get you out of the gnarliest of extreme situations.

And take note, this isn’t any ordinary lift that was done just for the sake of fitting those massive tires under the fenders. This was engineered to function offroad, where no CRV or RAV4 would dare set foot. The flexy suspension enables it to traverse extreme terrain while keeping all 4 tires firmly planted on the ground. And the external reservoir shocks mean that no matter how rough the obstacles may get, you can be assured that the suspension would never let you down in terms of performance.

Despite the elevated ride height courtesy of the offroad suspension system and large-diameter Super Swamper TSL tires, the Safari Snorkel installed means business. This ride can now traverse rivers and floodwaters that would swallow whole any other ordinary SUV.

And this ride is equipped not just with the gear to get you through the rough stuff, but with the armor to protect the body and the super cool mural of The Punisher from wayward rocks or trees.

LRPhils Motors, Inc., the exclusive distributor of Land Rover vehicles in the Philippines Treated the Media and the public to a Terrapod Experience at the Rockwell Power Plant Mall March 25-27, 2010. The Terrapod is a mobile off-road track that can demonstrate the capabilities of the Land Rover vehicles’ in a similar off road terrain done in a safe and controlled environment.

One of the four obstacles of the Terrapod is called the Slide Slope, a 25-degree embankment that shows the stability that of a Land rover side ways. Then the Walking holes, this demonstrate distribute of engine power to the wheels with the most traction showing you and idea of it 4×4 capabilities. Up and Over a 30-degree ascent and a 30-degree descent. Last would be the SEESAW, its a swinging plank that tests a vehicle’s chassis strength and balance. The Terrapod brings the experience of Land Rover’s off-road supremacy to everyone. Why get a car when you can get a Land Rover?

<object

The vehicle is known for its ruggedness and ease of maintenance. But somehow, the name “Tamaraw” still doesn’t seem to fit the vehicle, as the animal’s preferred habitat is tropical highland forested areas – places where the 2-wheel-drive, low ground clearance Toyota Tamaraw FX could barely reach.

But one crafty Pinoy offroading genius named Paul Javier thought otherwise. He took a stock Toyota Tamaraw FX, stuffed it with all the mechanical wizardry necessary to give justice to the name “Tamaraw”, and viola! The Super Tamaraw FX:

After countless offroad trips and by much praise from the Pinoy offroading community, the Super Tamaraw FX has been given the pet name “Range Revo” due to the Land Rover mechanical components used to turn it into what it is today. It has Range Rover Axles and a Series Land Rover transfer case.

The Super Tamaraw FX in action showing what a real Tamaraw can do:

The tires are 36-inch tall military non-directional treads, similar to those fitted in army 6×6 trucks. The long wheelbase allows the fitment of a dual transfer case system for a wide selection of low gearing, and a super low crawl ratio. Despite the complexity, this rig is still capable of going 120kph on the highway.

Raging river crossings? No problem!

Did you think underwater riverbeds are always flat? That’s probably true only in the flooded streets of Manila. It doesn’t mean that you have a snorkel, you can go through terrain like this. Because out there with mother nature, things are way more extreme. You have got to have a capable offroad vehicle to go through terrain like this.

This ride has been aptly named “Ondoy” for its sheer size, ride height, and massive proportions. If typhoon Ondoy were to strike again, this ride would be more than capable of tackling most of the stuff Ondoy could throw in. And that is exactly the reason why this vehicle was created – to aid in future flood rescue operaitons.

This monstrous 1999 Toyota Hilux is courtesy of Jeff’s Offroad Shop in Baguio City. What’s really nice is that all the modifications done to lift the Hilux from stock, to its current state, is all completely bolt-on; no cutting and welding involved. The lift kit, combined with the massive 46-inch tires Mickey Thompson Baja Claw tires wrapped around 15×19 inch wheels, give it a total lift of 32 inches from the stock Hilux’s ride height. If you were of average male height, your eye-level would be just about along “Ondoy’s” bumper.

Despite the complex array of modifications done, it all blends together to make it stand tall, be proud, and look good with its Chromalusion paint finish. The unique paint finish has no single color of their own. Movement, light, and differing viewing angles create a rainbow effect.

Believe it or not, this is Jeff’s daily driver! Talk about an all-in-one ride: Daily Driver, Show Vehicle, Offroader, and Flood Rescue Operation Vehicle all rolled into one package. And how much does it cost to have one of these babies? About PHP 800,000, plus the cost of a second-hand Hilux. I don’t know about you, but to me, that’s a reasonable amount considering the outcome. I think it’s worth every penny.

This is another more subtle creation by Jeff’s Offroad, compared to “Ondoy” that is; and was named after the next devastating typhoon which immediately followed typhoon Ondoy: “Pepeng” – a custom modified Chevrolet Silverado.

Sources:

Jeff’s Offroad Shop
This is rapidly becoming the toughest one day off-road race in the world. The King Of The Hammers is an extremely brutal race which combines rock cock crawling with Baja and Dakar style desert racing. You have got to have a rig built not only for be able to tackle high-speed jumps and turns, but also manage going through boulders and rock gardens. This video is jaw dropping. Being part of this will be an experience of a lifetime.

And then thought posting it on my blog to ask around who owned it so I can do a formal feature.

The first time I saw this Vitara, I only caught a glimpse of its backside. What drew my attention was its stance as compared to the Pajero beside it. It was obviously lifted, and exposed the familiar tread pattern of Mudstar Radial Mud Terrain Tires which is the same type I run on my Land Rover. Apart from that, call me crazy but I’m sure a lot of you auto enthusiasts can relate with me when I say I can sense there’s something else lurking underneath the skin of this vehicle, because the “Aura” is different… I can sense it has more energy compared to that of a normal Vitara. Plus of course the visible lockable hubs replacing the auto hubs found in Vitaras of standard trim.

But then I put the thought aside and decided to leave it as I might look suspicious taking pictures of it with a non-discreet SLR camera, and just went back to going about my business on why I was really in that location. “Daym! I can’t help it! It’s calling my attention!”, I say to myself, despite the fact that I was more than a hundred yards away, and the Vitara wasn’t in plain sight. I could imagine this Vitara ripping through the trails, slinging mud, and traversing unpassable terrain. I wanted to see what’s underneath it to find out what it’s capable of!

Answering it’s call, I came back for a closer inspection. True enough, upon checking under the front suspension, I found a coil-sprung solid axle in place of the original independent front suspension
which I immediatly took a snapshot of, half hoping the owner would spot me checking his ride out.

While checking my shot, a little boy crept up beside me and was peeping over my shoulder checking out my shot. So I got a hint and asked if the Vitara was his dad’s car; to which he replied: “No, it’s our car.” So I stood up and looked behind me to find his dad, and the owner of the vehicle, Mr. Vitoy Mallari. What luck, the owner! I would no longer have to go through the trouble of asking and starting this article as “Does anyone know who owns this?”.

I promptly introduced myself and asked if it would be okay to feature his snazzy Vitara on these very pages. He agreed! And with that, here are more detailed shots (with his 2 children as models), as well as the spec sheet below.

The 26th of September, 2009 is the day when Metro Manila was hit by the most devastating calamity in decades – Typhoon Ondoy. With a month’s worth of rainfall pouring within just 6 hours, almost 80% of Metro Manila became submerged in flood water as high as 2 storeys.

As of 3pm on the 3rd of October, 2009, the total number of casualties had soared up to 335, with 288 Dead, 5 Injured, and 42 missing; and there are currently 17,940 families currently staying in evacuation centers.

But rather than tuning into the TV networks only to find out about the increasing death toll, and the efforts to collect relief goods and funds worth tens of millions of pesos, I would rather see the valiant souls who traverse the mud, flood water, and unpassable terrain just to bring relief goods for our hungry and needy brethren. Watching TV only makes you feel depressed and helpless. But what if the media focused on airing the relief operations? Wouldn’t it foster feelings of hope to our countrymen?

It is worth noting that it is not only the government who is physically working to collect and deliver relief goods, but also the normal day-to-day civilian Pinoys and Pinays, students and professionals included. These are the undaunted men and women whom we should give credit to, and it is these efforts that we should be transmitting on the airwaves. Because despite the world suffering from the global recession, and our country being tagged as part of the 3rd world, Filipinos are still considered as one of the happiest people in the world. And with this, I’d like to show you why. Look at the last picture in the slide show hehehe.

So rather than writing an article with pictures about the aftermath of the depression, I would like to give hope to our fellow Filipinos that despite the calamities, there is light. Here are some shots of the relief operations being conducted by our fellow Filipinos to bring help to those in need.

And, as this is CustomPinoyRides, no relief operation can be done without the help of our trusty 4x4s. These offroad vehicles plunged ahead on roads which were closed to ordinary traffic because the havoc wreaked by Ondoy. These are not special emergency vehicles, but rather, 4x4s and daily drivers used in our daily commutes to work, or the occassional weekend offroad outings.

Credits and a standing ovation goes to the many members of <a
