This ride has been aptly named “Ondoy” for its sheer size, ride height, and massive proportions. If typhoon Ondoy were to strike again, this ride would be more than capable of tackling most of the stuff Ondoy could throw in. And that is exactly the reason why this vehicle was created – to aid in future flood rescue operaitons.
This monstrous 1999 Toyota Hilux is courtesy of Jeff’s Offroad Shop in Baguio City. What’s really nice is that all the modifications done to lift the Hilux from stock, to its current state, is all completely bolt-on; no cutting and welding involved. The lift kit, combined with the massive 46-inch tires Mickey Thompson Baja Claw tires wrapped around 15×19 inch wheels, give it a total lift of 32 inches from the stock Hilux’s ride height. If you were of average male height, your eye-level would be just about along “Ondoy’s” bumper.
Despite the complex array of modifications done, it all blends together to make it stand tall, be proud, and look good with its Chromalusion paint finish. The unique paint finish has no single color of their own. Movement, light, and differing viewing angles create a rainbow effect.
Believe it or not, this is Jeff’s daily driver! Talk about an all-in-one ride: Daily Driver, Show Vehicle, Offroader, and Flood Rescue Operation Vehicle all rolled into one package. And how much does it cost to have one of these babies? About PHP 800,000, plus the cost of a second-hand Hilux. I don’t know about you, but to me, that’s a reasonable amount considering the outcome. I think it’s worth every penny.
This is another more subtle creation by Jeff’s Offroad, compared to “Ondoy” that is; and was named after the next devastating typhoon which immediately followed typhoon Ondoy: “Pepeng” – a custom modified Chevrolet Silverado.
