A British driver took his Nissan GT-R out for a spin, and apparently miscalculated his braking when chain reaction accident occurred. The car ahead slammed on the brakes, the van which was following did the same, and then the GT-R driver just so happened to have braked too late and tagged the van’s tow hitch.
The only physical damage was a minor crack in the GT-R’s front fascia, but that was enough to activate the GT-R’s built-in pedestrian safety system. This deployed the two, single-use hood rams which raised the hood to add a cushioning gap for the “unlucky pedestrian” whom the GT-R had mistaken to be a tow hitch.
How much for the repairs? New hood hinges, hood rams, and electronic controller for the pedestrian safety system, plus replacing and painting a new bumper turned out to cost him £11,000, or around PHP 800,000.
If that had happened to me, I would’ve just completely removed the hood rams, repair the hinges and reinstall the hood. Then just patch up the front bumper and repaint. The PHP 90,000 regular Nissan GT-R service cost is already pricey, but adding a PHP 800,000 repair bill for a minor crack is too much.
